Changing face of Colombo Fort

ColomboFort1The changing landscape of Colombo Fort would surely baffle anyone visiting the metropolis after several years. I who happened to take a stroll in Fort recently after many years was no exception. The first thing that caught my eyes was the now renovated old Dutch Hospital building which till recently housed the Fort Police Station. The heritage building has been restored to its former glory giving the area an aura of grandiosity, thanks to the meticulous work done by the Army under the supervision of the defence ministry.

 

Young Public Health Physician from Sri Lanka at the World Health Summit in Berlin

Agampodi1The Inter Academy Medical Panel (IAMP) is the leading global network of medical academies and medical sections of academies of science and engineering, which is committed to improving health worldwide. The IAMP Young Physicians Leaders Programme is a satellite event, which took place at the World Health Summit 2012 in Berlin from October 19th to 24th. 16 outstanding young physician leaders were selected and nominated by IAMP members for a specific workshop to develop their leadership skills during mentoring sessions with an international group of physician leaders. The programme also included the participation in the World Health Summit taking place from October 23rd to 25th.

Sri Lanka tourist arrivals up 18-pct in September

SCENIC-newSri Lanka's tourist arrivals rose 18.1 percent to 71,111 in September 2012 from a year earlier, with arrivals during the nine months up 16 percent to 693,772 data from the Indian Ocean island's tourist promotion office showed. Arrivals from Western Europe rose 15.1 percent to 22,327 with German arrivals surging 46 percent to 4,942 and top generating market Britain rising 9.1 percent after showing disappointing performance so far this year. In the first ten months of the year UK arrivals were only up 3.5 percent to 81,762. Arrivals from France rose 6.4 percent to 3,030 but Netherlands another key market fell 3.3 percent to 1,456.
